Pig farming in Ghana has changed for good over the past four years. In moving forward however, we need to get the industry structured. The value chain should be structured properly.
A structured Pig Farming Industry
Pig farmers should be able to concentrate on their pig farms. When their pigs mature, all they need to do is to transport it to the abattoir for it to be slaughtered and sold and their money deposited into their account within one week. Unfortunately, to survive presently, a farmer has to handle the whole value chain. Production through to slaughtering and sales. Those who cannot invest in a sale outlet are always cash trapped. Majority close down due to the stress from selling their pigs.
Only a handful have markets outlet and they most often rely on middle men to sell their animals. A structured pig farming industry would help pig farmers tremendously. To get to the next level, we need to get the industry structured for farmers to realize the maximize benefits from pig farming.
Our Progress as an Association
Since our inception in October 2013, the executives have worked so hard to bring the association to this point. we have registered the association, developed and approved its constitution, developed its website, organized a training workshop for all pig farmers in Ghana and most importantly, helped to inaugurate five regional branch of Pig Farmers Association of Ghana.
So far, we have;
- PFAG-Greater Accra Branch
- PFAG-Eastern Region Branch
- PFAG-Central Region Branch
- PFAG-Ashanti Region Branch
- PFAG-Western Region Branch
Plans are however on the way to organize a Pork Joint Management & Processing Training and a Pork show in November and March 2017 respectively
Our Greatest Challenge as an Association
Our inability to get the industry structured will be our demise. Presently, the few abattoirs do not want to process pigs because of religious reasons. The association which is still young will have to take the bull by the horn and fight its own fight. The government has numerous problems and what they can provide for now is an enabling environment. The Association need its own abattoir coupled with a cold room and a small processing unit. I am therefore appealing to any individual out there who wish to help Pig farmers in Ghana to come to our aid in helping us acquire any of the followings;
- 2 state of the art abattoirs
- A cold room
- A processing unit.
- A sty that can hold 200 matured pigs
- Two cold vans
- A truck
I am not mentioning any monetary amount to the above listed items, but we want Embassies, Non Governmental Organizations, Individuals and any foundations all over the world to take up any or all the projects and help pig farmers in Ghana. This will be a game changer for the Industry.
