I have visited numerous pig farms but so far, none is as neat and well organized like Kwaku’s new farm at Nsanwam.
The rooms are well constructed with solid concrete floor and a well constructed drainage. He even built a septic tank to collect their feaces. The smelly odour that characterize most pig farms was absent at his farm.
When I asked how much he has spent on the farm, I was impressed when he told me the amout. $10, 0000.00
Kwaku Adu Profile.
I first met Kwaku on his blog. www.pigfarmgh.blogspot.com. He is married and works at Vodafone. He started his pig farm at ofankor with four pregnant sows and 4 gilts in December, 2011. Presently he has about 80 pigs in total at his Nsawam farm and about 30 pigs at his Ofankor farm.
Surprisinlly, Kwaku has no problem with selling his animals. He has some Kaneshie women who come to the farm to buy his animals. He also sell some to Agya Appiah Bitters sausage processing company.
His major challenges was capital for expansion and access to feed. He informed us that his truck was camped at the Achimota Brewery for five days but with no success in obtaining the malt. He had to buy from the cartels at Gh270.00
He also complained bitterlly about movement of pigs from one location to another without a vet checking whether the animals are free from disease. This was because a neighbour brought some disease infected pigs from Asamankese, it caused the deaths of numerous pigs at Ofankor. Kwaku lost over 30 pigs.
A visit to Agya Appiah Bitters Pig Farm and Processing Company
After my tour at Kweku’s farm, we visited Agya Appiah Bitters pig farm at Kotoku.
I was really Impressed with what I saw on his farm. He started with 20 gilts last year and he has close to 300 pigs on the farm as of the time we visited.
Most of his animals are used for bacon. He also has a meat processing company by the farm where he produces beef sausages and pork sausages.
The managing director of the company advised us to diversify . He admonished us to go into turkey production since it was added to the beef to make the beef sausage and for that reason, it sometimes become scarse in the system. All the turkeys used in beef sausages in Ghana are imported.
He advised us to popularize pork in the country. To succeed in Pig farming, he advised upcoming pig farmers to start with the right breed.
