On the 19th of this month, Pig farmers in all the regions in Ghana would be meeting to discuss pertinent issues concerning pig farming in Ghana.
What are we really meeting for?
We as pig farmers have to have one strong voice that will oppose any policy that can affect the prospects of pig farmers in Ghana.
Some pig farmers are just doing trial and error, they feed their animals anything, their record keeping habits is bad. No proper arrangements with the vet. Some have reared their animals for more than 8 months but the pigs weight is nothing to write home about. Some can’t even tell the kind of breed they are rearing. We need to organize some training for all members in other to maximize profits from the pig farm.
Another important issue to discuss probably at another meeting date is ‘ who is buying our pigs?’ and at what price do we sell. I know some members sell their animals individually, but with our combined efforts, can we establish a pork joint, pork show or pork market, where there will be ready markets for our pigs, we need to brainstorm to come out with the best marketting strategies.
To give the association a good foundation, we need to elect interim executives to steer the affairs of the association, select some members to draft the constitution of the association and probably get to know one another better.
The meeting would start at exactly 10.00am, please try and come to at least give some of us the encouragement that some dreams are worth fighting for. I hope to see all pig farmers on the 19th, that is next week saturday at Dansoman. Please call me on 0244092052 to confirm your participation.
